Bringing Comfort and Healing to Terror Victims
“…and under his wings you will find refuge…” Psalms 91:4
“Rescue me from my enemies, Lord, for I hide myself in you...For your name’s sake, Lord, preserve my life; in your righteousness, bring me out of trouble.” Psalm 143:9,11
‘“Comfort, yes, comfort My people!”’ we are told, at the beginning of Isaiah chapter 40. Through project Under His Wings, CFI seeks to fulfil that commission in practical and meaningful ways. Sadly, there are a great number of terror victims in Israel today. Since the founding of CFI in 1985, thousands of Israelis have been killed in war or terror and tens of thousands have been wounded (sometimes with life-changing injuries). For each person that is killed or injured, there are many more family members, friends and neighbours whose lives are also negatively impacted – and often, are devastated. This devastation takes not only an emotional toll, but oftentimes there are many practical repercussions within a family: in the case of death or disability, an income is often lost to the household; rents, mortgages, utilities or food bills cannot be paid; sometimes, special disabled adaptations are required or even a complete house move is needed; specialist equipment may be required and other adjustments.
Through project Under His Wings, CFI is able to come alongside and support terror victims and their families during their darkest hours. Some of the activities of the project include:
- Home or hospital visits to terror victims and/or their families to offer comfort, emotional support and friendship. Often, gifts of flowers may be given, and sometimes a certificate of bravery for the terror victim, for instance, if they have been injured during the course of duty as a soldier or police / security personnel.
- Attendance at shiva to pay respects (shiva is a period of mourning practiced by many Jewish families during which families remain at home for a period of seven days following the loss of a loved one, grieving together, and receiving visits from friends, family, neighbours, mourners and well-wishers). Often, a shiva gift is provided of essential food supplies, during the period when the family will not be going shopping.
- Grants to terror victims and/or their families to help them to cover any unplanned expenses they may face, or to pay for specific financial hardships or needs.
- Purchase of specialist equipment to assist with physical disabilities
- Scholarships to assist with education where terror victims need to retrain in new occupations as a result of their physical injuries or psychological trauma.
