Assisting the Underprivileged in Israel
“Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world.” James 1:27
“And the King will answer and say to them, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.’” Matthew 25:40
Sometimes, people fall upon hard times in life and quickly descend into poverty, lack and all too often, debt. In Israel, unlike some countries, levels of poverty and debt are veiled to some extent, and people can often seem as though they are living comfortably, when behind the scenes, people are up to their eyeballs in debt, maxed out on multiple credit cards and skipping meals – let alone able to run a car or motorcycle. Israel regularly appears as one of the top twenty most expensive countries in the world, and a great number of goods are imported into the country. The situation is especially bad in the urban metropolitan areas of Israel, i.e. Tel Aviv – Yaffo and Jerusalem, where the cost of living is even greater. The cycle of poverty can easily pull people into depression and despair and is one of the leading cause of the fracture of marriages and family units.
Besides those experiencing general poverty, this project assists a wide variety of people in need, including the destitute and indigent, religious Jews who have been outcast by their families, the blind, hospitals and institutions, orphanages, homes for severely handicapped children, and those who are sick. In addition, the project has helped to support Red Army War Veterans in Israel, Siberian work camp / Gulag survivors and continues to support other War Survivors.
In remembrance of James 2:15-16, CFI is privileged to assist those in need with practical assistance, as an expression of the love of many Christians standing with the Jewish people from around the world. In the interests of stewarding funds to those most in need of help, CFI financially means-tests each applicant. Every week, CFI is providing food vouchers and is also able to help with covering expenditures for those experiencing financial hardship, such as:
- Rent or mortgage payments
- Utility bills such as electricity, water, gas or broadband / landline telephone
- Council / municipal taxes
- School and education fees
- Debts and overdrafts
- Medical and dental costs
